Oh Happy Play was created with a simple but powerful belief: every child deserves the chance to play, no matter their circumstances. I started this work to help close the “play gap” in our community, because I have seen firsthand how play shapes children’s confidence, creativity, and sense of belonging..
For more than 25 years, I have devoted my life to young people. I’ve worn many hats over the years—recreation leader, high school teacher, doula, pre-college mentor, and storyteller—and in every role, children have been my greatest teachers. They remind me daily of the joy, resilience, and possibility that play brings into our lives..
I am also the proud mother of four amazing children who continue to inspire me and keep me grounded in what matters most. Professionally, I serve as the Director of the African American Museum of Iowa, where I work to preserve history, celebrate culture, and create spaces where community can flourish..
Oh Happy Play is a natural extension of all these parts of my life. It is my way of giving back—of making sure that children in our community have the tools, spaces, and opportunities to do what they do best: play, explore, imagine, and grow. Through this work, I hope to spread not only toys but also joy, connection, and a sense of possibility for every child we reach.
